Summary

A study on the Sichuan snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana) in Shennongjia, China, reveals that fruticose lichens, which are rich in nonstructural carbohydrates and low in crude fibers and plant secondary compounds, constitute a significant portion (38.4%) of their diet. This dietary preference, aligned with the seasonal availability of food resources, contributes to their long daily travel distances (over 1,000 meters) and large range sizes (over 10 km²). The research also highlights patchy distribution of food resources, leading to increased movement and reduced resting time, particularly among adult females in larger groups. Male dispersal between social units and groups was also observed, suggesting dynamic social structures within these primate populations.
