Summary

A rare 15th-century Slavonic manuscript from Rila Monastery, containing John Chrysostom’s Homilies on the Statues, reveals a meticulously annotated revision of an earlier 10th-century Preslav translation. The manuscript, dated to 1473 and attributed to scribe Vladislav the Grammarian, includes 21 interlinear and marginal glosses that clarify Greek terms, provide biblical references, offer synonyms, or serve as editorial notes. Analysis suggests these annotations were likely added by Vladislav himself, reflecting his role as both a scribe and an editor who updated terminology to contemporary standards. The study compares these glosses with the Preslav original and other medieval Slavonic texts, offering insights into textual evolution and scribal practices in late medieval Bulgaria.
