Summary

Oysters, particularly Pinctada capensis, are facing significant decline on Inhaca Island, Southern Mozambique, primarily due to overharvesting and natural causes. A three-year study revealed that 72.1% of respondents reported a decrease in P. capensis populations, with excessive catching cited as the main factor (75.4%), followed by natural death (24.6%). While Saccostrea cucullata showed no significant decline, both species exhibited higher densities and catch per unit effort in less accessible areas, particularly for P. capensis. The research employed transects, quadrats, and daily fisheries catches, alongside interviews with collectors, to assess trends. These findings underscore the urgent need for sustainable management practices, including aquaculture introduction, to preserve oyster populations and support local livelihoods.
