The sacred and climate change: Local perceptions from KaNyaka island in Mozambique
Residents of KaNyaka Island, Mozambique, perceive climate change as deeply intertwined with their spiritual and physical environments, offering critical insights for adaptation strategies. This study reveals that integrating local ecological knowledge—rooted in everyday observations and worldviews—enhances collective responses to climate risks. Researchers used semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and forum theater to capture diverse perceptions, arguing that scientists should collaborate with communities as co-producers of knowledge to address socio-environmental challenges effectively. The approach highlights the potential for climate adaptation when grounded in localized experiences and spiritual frameworks.
Catch per Unit Effort, Density and Size Distribution of the Oysters Pinctada capensis and Saccostrea cucullata (Class Bivalvea) on Inhaca Island, Southern Mozambique
Oysters, particularly Pinctada capensis, are facing significant decline on Inhaca Island, Southern Mozambique, primarily due to overharvesting and natural causes. A three-year study revealed that 72.1% of respondents reported a decrease in P. capensis populations, with excessive catching cited as the main factor (75.4%), followed by natural death (24.6%). While Saccostrea cucullata showed no significant decline, both species exhibited higher densities and catch per unit effort in less accessible areas, particularly for P. capensis. The research employed transects, quadrats, and daily fisheries catches, alongside interviews with collectors, to assess trends. These findings underscore the urgent need for sustainable management practices, including aquaculture introduction, to preserve oyster populations and support local livelihoods.
