Dytiscidae, Noteridae, Haliplidae, Hydraenidae, Hydrophilidae, Hydrochidae, Helophoridae, Spercheidae and Dryopidae (Coleoptera) of the Russian part of the Curonian Spit: an attempt of complex faunal analysis

World Heritage Site: Curonian Spit

Publication Type: Article

Publication Identifier: WHE1A821DCEAF

Summary

A comprehensive annotated checklist of nine beetle families (Coleoptera) from the Russian part of the Curonian Spit reveals 90 species, with Dytiscidae and Hydrophilidae being the most diverse. The study highlights that unspecialized eurybiont and stagnophil species dominate this region, particularly those associated with small temporary water bodies. Notably, species such as Hydroporus obscurus, Hygrotus parallelogrammus, and others were identified, while specialized rheobiont and rheophil groups were absent. The research also explores the potential for aquatic Coleoptera to inhabit the Curonian Lagoon, contributing valuable insights into the biodiversity of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
