Key Aesthetic Appeal Concepts of Coastal Dunes and Forests on the Example of the Curonian Spit (Lithuania)
Aesthetic appeal of coastal dunes and forests on the Curonian Spit varies significantly among visitors, local inhabitants, and experts. The most appealing landscapes include white mobile dunes and combinations of white and grey (grassland) dunes, with visual coherence being a key factor for locals. Experts, however, emphasized stewardship, naturalness, imageability, and visual scale as defining scenic appeal, while disturbance and complexity diminished attractiveness. This divergence in perceptions suggests potential management conflicts. The study used paired comparison surveys of 45 landscapes, semi-structured interviews with locals, and a Delphi technique involving experts to elicit key aesthetic concepts.
Eutrophication and effects of algal bloom in the south–western part of the Curonian Lagoon alongside the Curonian Spit
Intensive algal blooms, particularly Cyanobacteria hyperblooms, are a persistent issue in the south-western part of the Curonian Lagoon, driven by high mineral nitrogen and phosphorus ratios. These blooms, occurring from July to October, lead to significant environmental impacts such as increased ammonia nitrogen levels, pH, and BOD5, exceeding thresholds for fishery waters. Over six years (2008–2016), chlorophyll a concentrations consistently reached hyperbloom states (>100 μg/l), causing localized oxygen deficits and fish mortality due to algal accumulation and decomposition. Water temperature emerged as a key factor influencing seasonal and long-term variability in phytoplankton abundance, thereby shaping eutrophication levels in the lagoon. The study analyzed data from four sampling points near the Curonian Spit, providing critical insights into the ecological consequences of eutrophication in this UNESCO-listed coastal lagoon.
Laelapidae mites (Acari: Mesostigmata) infesting small rodents in the Curonian Spit, Lithuania
Researchers identified five species of Laelapidae mites—Laelaps agilis, Hyperlaelaps microti, Haemogamassus nidi, Eulaelaps stabularis, and Myonyssus gigas—as parasites infesting small rodents in the Curonian Spit, Lithuania. Mite species were determined through morphological analysis of adult females and males, providing new insights into their distribution and potential ecological roles in this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Genesis, distribution and dynamics of lagoon marl extrusions along the Curonian Spit, southeast Baltic Coast
A unique geological process involving the extrusion of lagoon marl from beneath massive migrating sand dunes characterizes large segments of the Curonian Spit, a 100-km-long sandy barrier separating the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. This study reveals that relict lagoon marl, composed of Holocene organic sediments like gyttja and clayey gyttja, was deformed, compacted, and dehydrated by landward-migrating dunes during the Littorina Sea transgression—a phenomenon termed 'dune tectonics.' Using advanced techniques such as side-scan sonar, multibeam echosounder, seismic imaging, sediment sampling, and video observations, researchers identified extensive underwater marl outcrops at depths of 5–15 m along the southern half of the spit. Spatial analysis further constrained the southeastward migration rates of the dune massif. A conceptual model explains both onshore marl exposures above the regional water table and offshore relict marl diapirs, offering new insights into the dynamic interplay between coastal geomorphology and sedimentary processes in this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A national discovery and loss of a landscape – photographic images of the Curonian Spit
The Curonian Spit, a historic and culturally significant landscape divided between Lithuania and the Kaliningrad Oblast (Russia), has been transformed from a symbol of national discovery to one of loss in collective memory. This shift is evident through photographic representations in popular Bildbände (photographic books) from 1930s to 1960s, which captured the landscape's iconic status during its heyday as part of East Prussia. The study reveals how these visual and textual depictions shaped perceptions, ultimately framing the region as a lost territory in post-World War II narratives. By analyzing archival photographic materials, the research explores the evolution of this landscape's imagery, highlighting its enduring cultural significance despite geopolitical changes.
Molecular Identification of Phytoplasmas Infecting Diseased Pine Trees in the UNESCO-Protected Curonian Spit of Lithuania
A large-scale infection of pine trees by phytoplasmas, particularly Candidatus (Ca.) Phytoplasma pini-related strains, has been documented for the first time in Lithuania. This discovery challenges the conventional understanding that phytoplasmas primarily affect angiosperms and expands their known host range to include coniferous plants like Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and mountain pine (Pinus mugo). The study, conducted between 2008–2014 in the UNESCO-Protected Curonian Spit and Southern Lithuania, identified phytoplasma infections in nearly 300 trees, with 80% testing positive. Molecular analysis using RFLP and nucleotide sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene revealed that 98% of infected samples belonged to Ca. Phytoplasma pini-related strains (subgroup 16SrXXI-A), while a small fraction were associated with Ca. Phytoplasma asteris-related strains (subgroup 16SrI-A). This is the first report of subgroup 16SrI-A in pine trees, highlighting its potential broader geographic distribution and ecological impact on coniferous forests.
Reconstruction of the Dead (Grey) Dune evolution along the Curonian Spit, Southeastern Baltic
Researchers have reconstructed the evolutionary history of the Dead (Grey) Dunes, a significant geological feature on the Lithuanian half of the UNESCO-listed Curonian Spit. Using advanced geophysical and geochronological techniques—including ground-penetrating radar (GPR), LiDAR data, and radiocarbon dating—the study identified four distinct phases of dune formation spanning from 5800 to 4500, 3900–3100, 2600–2400 calendar years BP, and the modern period. These findings reveal the dynamic nature of this aeolian environment, offering new insights into its paleogeographic development over millennia.
Hindcast of sediment flow along the Curonian Spit under different wave climates
A rotation of wave approach direction by more than 10 degrees could lead to the complete disappearance of convergence points of sediment flow along the Curonian Spit, potentially causing substantial coastal damage. The study analyzed longshore sediment transport under existing and future wave climates using the CERC formula, based on numerically simulated long-term time series of wave properties from 1970–2007. While the spit is currently in an almost perfect equilibrium shape, systematic rotation of wave approach directions showed a linear increase in net transport rate, though bulk transport rates would remain largely unchanged.
Detection of Babesia Sp. EU1 and Members of Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiae in Ticks Collected from Migratory Birds at Curonian Spit, North-Western Russia

Ectomycorrhizal fungal communities on seedlings and conspecific trees of Pinus mugo grown on the coastal dunes of the Curonian Spit in Lithuania
A study on the Curonian Spit, Lithuania, reveals that Pinus mugo, a non-native tree species thriving in harsh coastal dunes, forms ectomycorrhizal (ECM) associations with a low but consistent fungal diversity. Molecular analysis identified 12 ECM taxa across three study sites, with Cenococcum geophilum dominating both seedlings and mature trees, though more abundantly on seedlings. Shannon's diversity indices indicated slightly higher diversity in mature trees. While mycorrhizal communities were similar across sites, subtle differences emerged between seedlings and mature trees. The study also highlighted discrepancies between below-ground ECM diversity and aboveground fruiting body surveys, emphasizing the need for comprehensive sampling methods to accurately assess fungal symbionts. These findings suggest P. mugo's adaptability in distinct habitats, supported by a stable suite of ECM symbionts that facilitate growth and natural regeneration.
