Mineral Extractive Industries in the Context of European World Heritage Cultural Landscape Conservation and Management: The Case Study of the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region

Current mining activities, including the revival of historic mines near protected areas, pose significant risks to cultural World Heritage sites. The study evaluates these impacts on the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region, a UNESCO site, and proposes conservation strategies to mitigate negative effects while preserving its Outstanding Universal Value (OUV). It distinguishes between natural and cultural heritage values, offering recommendations for assessing both adverse and beneficial mining influences. The research combines spatial analysis with historical data to inform sustainable management practices.
