Mineral Extractive Industries in the Context of European World Heritage Cultural Landscape Conservation and Management: The Case Study of the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region
Current mining activities, including the revival of historic mines near protected areas, pose significant risks to cultural World Heritage sites. The study evaluates these impacts on the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region, a UNESCO site, and proposes conservation strategies to mitigate negative effects while preserving its Outstanding Universal Value (OUV). It distinguishes between natural and cultural heritage values, offering recommendations for assessing both adverse and beneficial mining influences. The research combines spatial analysis with historical data to inform sustainable management practices.
Mining Heritage and Mining Landscape Krušnohoří/Erzgebirge as a Part of the UNESCO Heritage
A comprehensive analysis of the Mining Cultural Landscape of Krušnohoří/Erzgebirge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019, reveals diverse perceptions and management practices among stakeholders. The study highlights how mining heritage is utilized and preserved across public, private, and non-profit sectors at local, regional, and national levels. By examining the Jáchymov region—renowned for its long-standing mining history—the research provides insights into the formation and governance of this unique landscape. It underscores the importance of collaborative approaches in sustaining cultural heritage while addressing the needs of different interest groups.
Spatial 3D Documentation of Historical Mining Remnants in Forested Area in the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region UNESCO Site
Aerial laser scanning (ALS) and personal laser mobile scanning (PLS) have emerged as effective tools for documenting historical mining relics hidden in forested areas of the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region. This study demonstrates that these techniques can accurately capture and delineate surface mining features such as pits, dumps, water works, building remains, and historic entrance roads, many of which are currently undocumented or threatened by illegal treasure hunting with metal detectors. Close-range photogrammetry was also employed for detailed documentation of specific finds. The research highlights the potential of 3D documentation methods to preserve and study these often-overlooked archaeological sites before they are further damaged or lost.
