Summary
Aerial laser scanning (ALS) and personal laser mobile scanning (PLS) have emerged as effective tools for documenting historical mining relics hidden in forested areas of the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region. This study demonstrates that these techniques can accurately capture and delineate surface mining features such as pits, dumps, water works, building remains, and historic entrance roads, many of which are currently undocumented or threatened by illegal treasure hunting with metal detectors. Close-range photogrammetry was also employed for detailed documentation of specific finds. The research highlights the potential of 3D documentation methods to preserve and study these often-overlooked archaeological sites before they are further damaged or lost.
