Quercus banatus grows in Slovenia

World Heritage Site: Škocjan Caves

Publication Year: 2019

Publication Type: Article

Publication Identifier: WHE2C724469F7

Summary

A rare oak species, Quercus banatus, has been confirmed to grow in Slovenia, specifically within the Škocjan Caves Regional Park. This discovery is notable as the species was not previously recognized in the national Slovenian flora, despite its documentation in the Atlas Florae Europaeae under a different name (Q. dalechampii). Q. banatus individuals were identified during a brief field trip in two distinct locations: on the slope of a natural bridge between collapse dolines and near the Park’s Information Centre. The study highlights the importance of revisiting established botanical records, as this species evaded detection in Slovenia's comprehensive flora guide, Mala flora Slovenije.
