Summary
Overtourism poses a structural threat to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as demonstrated by the case of Venice and its Lagoon. The study reveals that international recognition, while intended to protect cultural heritage, can paradoxically increase vulnerability due to overcrowding, infrastructure strain, and loss of authenticity. Analyzing management dynamics from 1966 to 2023, this research highlights a disconnect between conservation goals and governance practices, driven by competing public and private interests. The findings underscore the fragility of the UNESCO system when faced with pressures that prioritize exploitation over heritage preservation.
