Summary
A key insight from this study is that the preservation of topography, water environments, and urban structures within Suwon Hwaseong Fortress remains largely intact, even after significant urban development. These elements maintain their historical continuity, providing critical context for understanding the fortress's past urban landscape. The research employed a three-phase approach: comparing 1911 land maps with current ones to assess changes in topography, water spaces, streets, and sites; analyzing these changes using field surveys, interviews, and literature; and categorizing preservation statuses (preserved, partially preserved, or disappeared). Findings reveal that while modern public facilities coexist with historic resources, recent restoration efforts risk damaging long-preserved elements. This underscores the need for integrated conservation strategies to protect Hwaseong's layered historical narrative across eras.
