Summary

The Nubian Bustard (Nubotis nuba), once widespread across the Sahel, faces severe population decline due to habitat degradation and intensified poaching. A comprehensive review reveals potential local extinctions in Mauritania, Mali, and Sudan, with remaining populations largely confined to Niger's Air and Ténéré Natural Reserves and Chad's Ouadi Rimé–Ouadi Achim Faunal Reserve. The study highlights critical threats, including human encroachment and poaching, which have fragmented and depleted the species. Urgent conservation measures, such as minimizing disturbance in key reserves and implementing sustainable management practices, are deemed essential for survival.
