Status and social structure of the critically endangered dama gazelle (Nanger dama) in the Aïr & Ténéré National Nature Reserve, Niger
A critically endangered dama gazelle population in Niger's Aïr & Ténéré National Nature Reserve shows signs of stability but faces severe recruitment challenges. The study, spanning 2017–2023, reveals a phenotypically mixed population with limited juvenile presence, indicating low reproductive success. Using direct observations, indirect signs, and camera traps, researchers documented an increasing trend in indirect evidence and a stable capture rate (CTR: 1.59 events per 100 trap-days). Most individuals were solitary adults, with group sizes averaging 2–4, while calving occurred in two distinct seasons. Phenotypic diversity suggests a spectrum rather than distinct subspecies, but the low proportion of young individuals (<20%) underscores urgent conservation needs, including habitat protection and reduced disturbance.
The conservation status of the Nubian Bustard Nubotis nuba: a review and prognosis
The Nubian Bustard (Nubotis nuba), once widespread across the Sahel, faces severe population decline due to habitat degradation and intensified poaching. A comprehensive review reveals potential local extinctions in Mauritania, Mali, and Sudan, with remaining populations largely confined to Niger's Air and Ténéré Natural Reserves and Chad's Ouadi Rimé–Ouadi Achim Faunal Reserve. The study highlights critical threats, including human encroachment and poaching, which have fragmented and depleted the species. Urgent conservation measures, such as minimizing disturbance in key reserves and implementing sustainable management practices, are deemed essential for survival.
