Summary

Glyphosate, one of the most widely used agricultural chemicals globally, is present in the Venice Lagoon primarily due to external inputs from river inlets and local agricultural activities. A study analyzing water, suspended particulate matter, and sediment samples from seven sites between 2019 and 2021 found maximum glyphosate concentrations of 260 ng/L in lagoon water, 7 ng/L in suspended particulate matter, and 15 ng/g in sediment, with spatial and temporal variations. The research employed ion chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry to assess glyphosate levels, providing insights into its distribution and sources in this unique ecosystem.
