Summary

The ancient ksour settlements of the M'Zab Valley, Algeria, have endured for over a thousand years, maintaining their original functions despite the rise of new residential areas. This resilience is attributed to cultural and social factors rather than physical ones. Key elements include strong community solidarity, the built environment serving as an ancestral heritage and symbol of identity, the comfort and convenience of ksour living, and adherence to tradition with social control. However, recent concerns threaten their long-term viability, necessitating governmental attention. Unlike prior research focusing on tourism and conservation, this study highlights continuity and sustainability, addressing gaps in understanding the broader factors contributing to these settlements' resilience.
