Summary

A review of soil salinity and irrigation water quality in the Awash River Basin, Ethiopia, reveals significant spatial variability in salinity levels. Middle Awash areas exhibit severe salinity issues, rendering vast irrigated farmlands unproductive due to highly alkaline conditions and high sodium content. In contrast, upper and lower Awash regions show relatively better soil and water quality, with minimal salinity risks. The deterioration of irrigation water quality in middle Awash is attributed to the blending of low-quality water sources, including lakes and drainage water. The study underscores the need for targeted management strategies, including appropriate cropping systems and practices tailored to local soil conditions and salinity levels.
