Punishing criminals indigenously: Perspectives from customary law and social relationship practices of Afar pastorals along the Lower Awash Valley

2023 — Article — WHE4760B65FFD

Customary law among the Afar pastoralists of Ethiopia's Lower Awash Valley offers non-adversarial approaches to justice that could serve as models for broader legal systems. The study, employing qualitative methods such as deep interviews and focused group discussions, reveals how traditional practices balance social structures while facing challenges from statutory laws, Sharia, and state-imposed regulations. Traditional courts struggle with enforcement, and there is debate over codifying indigenous law, which risks erosion by younger generations. These findings highlight the potential for integrating Afar customary practices into mainstream justice systems to enhance fairness and reform.

Early Pleistocene large mammals from Maka’amitalu, Hadar, lower Awash Valley, Ethiopia

2022 — Article — WHEE63F6B8DD5

Research at Maka’amitalu, Hadar, in Ethiopia’s lower Awash Valley, reveals significant species turnover in large mammal faunas during the Early Pleistocene (~2.4–1.9 Ma), with a small but diverse assemblage of 20 taxa. Unlike older deposits (e.g., Hadar Formation and Ledi-Geraru), this fauna shows subtle shifts in dietary proportions, body size, and bovid abundances, suggesting a constant rate of turnover over time. Biochronological analysis supports the age estimate from Bouroukie Tuff 3 (BKT-3). The study highlights the paleoecological and evolutionary significance of the region, contributing to our understanding of mammalian evolution in eastern Africa.
