Summary

Dry–wet cycling significantly degrades the physical and mechanical properties of red sandstone at Mount Wuyi, with elastic modulus proving to be the most sensitive parameter. After 15 cycles, microstructural integrity is severely compromised, marked by widespread dissolution of interstitial fillings and extensive microfracturing. The study identifies calcite reduction (46.6%) as a key mechanism in this degradation process. Using acoustic wave velocity, water saturation rate, triaxial compression tests, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction, researchers established a strength decay prediction equation, offering theoretical support for landscape protection and geological hazard prevention at the site.
