Summary
A study of the Govantes River in Vigan City, Philippines, reveals severe microbial contamination with high levels of total and fecal coliforms during both dry and wet seasons. The research identified Klebsiella pneumoniae (38.10%) as the most prevalent Enterobacteriaceae isolate, followed by Providencia stuartii (28.57%), AmpC β-lactamase-producing Enterobacter cloacae (23.81%), and AmpC β-lactamase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (9.52%). The consistent presence of these pathogens across sampling stations underscores the river's critical need for restoration to safeguard public health, particularly given its multiple uses including domestic, agricultural, and recreational purposes. The study employed the multiple-tube fermentation technique and Vitek 2 system for bacteriological analysis.
