Assessing the UNESCO community capacity building initiative: a case study from the historic city of Vigan, Philippines
A critical evaluation of UNESCO's capacity-building initiatives reveals that while such programs aim to empower local communities as heritage custodians, their effectiveness may be limited by preexisting community capabilities and social dynamics. The study, conducted using an ethnographic approach in Vigan, Philippinesexamined how homeowners interacted with a co-developed manual designed to educate them on conservation techniques. Findings suggest that capacity-building efforts must account for varying levels of social capital and adapt to local contexts to fully meet the needs of communities. The research provides actionable insights for future program designs, emphasizing the need for flexibility in addressing the complexities of heritage management at World Heritage sites.

A study analyzing case studies from Huế, Ayutthaya, George Town, and Vigan reveals that sustainable heritage management requires structured educational curricula, robust institutional support, certification systems, and regional training institutions. The research advocates for a comprehensive approach combining UNESCO’s Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) Recommendations with digital technologies to empower local communities, ensuring resilience and long-term preservation aligned with HUL principles.
Mapping online viewers’ social and non-social emotions using the lens of watching UNESCO cultural heritage sites’ travel vlogs
Heritage YouTube vlogs serve as powerful emotional catalysts, shaping viewers' social and non-social emotions—key drivers of heritage tourism sustainability. This study analyzed 3,089 comments from 64 vlogs featuring UNESCO sites like Vigan and the Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras, revealing a 'protractor model' where emotions cluster around reminiscence, intrigue, and desire. The research employs Phronetic Iterative Data Analysis to map these emotional responses, offering both theoretical expansion for heritage studies and practical insights for leveraging social media in site promotion.

A long-lost account of a scandalous incident during the Holy Week processions in 19th-century Vigan, Philippines, reveals the city's complex ethno-social structure and inter-ethnic power dynamics. The investigation into this event, which disrupted traditional ceremonies, sheds light on the privileges and tensions among ethnic groups, serving as an early indicator of broader social rivalries that would later impact church traditions in Manila. Using archival materials, the study analyzes these events through the lens of processional standards as symbols of authority, offering a nuanced understanding of Vigan's historical social hierarchy.
The Festival Extravaganza of Vigan City, Philippines
Vigan City's festivals, rooted in history and cultural significance, have evolved to foster community pride, patriotism, and remembrance. The study reveals that these events, including the Vigan City Fiesta, Viva Vigan Binatbatan Festival of the Arts, World Heritage Cities Solidarity Cultural Festival, and Raniag Twilight Festival, play a pivotal role in preserving and promoting Vigan's heritage. Through historical research design, interviews with 35 participants, observations, and document analysis, the study highlights the challenges faced by local governments in organizing these festivals while emphasizing the need for collaboration with national and international organizations to enhance their impact. Ethical guidelines were strictly adhered to throughout the research process.
