Summary

A first analytically robust estimate of maned wolf survival rates reveals significant temporal fluctuations, with adult survival ranging from 0.28 to 0.97 over a 13-year study in Emas National Park, Brazil. The analysis, using Burnham's live recapture/dead recovery models, found no sex-specific differences but strong evidence for age-related effects, with subadult survival at 0.63. These findings suggest similar mortality risks between adults and subadults and highlight the impact of temporal variability on population dynamics—a critical insight for conservation planning in the threatened Cerrado savannah.
