Summary
A collaborative research project, involving the Soprintendenza Archeologica and the University of Salerno, has made significant strides in reconstructing the ancient Appian Way's route east of Benevento. The study, which integrates topographic reconstruction with landscape archaeology, challenges previous hypotheses about the road's path, particularly from Benevento to Ponte Rotto on the Calore River. By employing a multidisciplinary approach—including archival studies, historical maps, paleobotanical analysis, surface surveys, aerial photography, and geomorphological surveys—the project aims to validate ground signs and archaeological traces left by ancient settlement dynamics. Since 2010, fieldwork has involved systematic and thematic surveys, revealing accurate data that supports a topographical reconstruction of the Consular way within a broader settlement system. The research proposes a more comprehensive understanding of the Appian Way's role in ancient landscape organization.
