Summary

This study reveals that the cult of Mary at Loreto, particularly through its architectural replicas, evolved significantly from the 15th to the 21st century. The research demonstrates how early replicas were more aligned with preexisting traditions, such as those of the Holy Sepulchre and recreations of the Holy Land in Sacri Monti complexes, rather than strictly adhering to the Santa Casa structure. By analyzing papally sanctioned spaces like Raphael's Chigi Chapel and Agostino Carracci’s altarpiece, alongside 16th-century proto-replicas in Varallo, Italy, the study explores the transition towards more precise replicas for early modern audiences. It also examines the potential personal or liturgical purposes behind these architectural variations.
