Summary

A rare tropical fungus, Lycogalopsis solmsii, previously misclassified as belonging to the Lycoperdales or Agaricales, has been reclassified based on genetic analysis. The study, conducted at Singapore Botanic Gardens, isolated and sequenced DNA from a 30-year-old specimen, revealing its affiliation with the gomphoid-phalloid group of Gasteromycetes. This finding challenges existing taxonomic classifications and underscores the importance of molecular techniques in fungal systematics. The research utilized ribosomal DNA sequencing to compare the fungus against a broad sample of Basidiomycetes, providing novel insights into its phylogenetic placement.
