Summary
Venice and its Lagoon face significant risks from cross-border disasters, necessitating a holistic approach to risk assessment. The ANDROID project's case study on Venice identifies key milestones, open questions, and future research needs, providing a strategic framework for scientists and educators to translate multifaceted knowledge into specific solutions. This work is closely linked to three other studies that delve deeper into hazards, vulnerability/resilience, and mitigation strategies for the site. Notably, the City of Venice's participation in the UNISDR Program 'Making Cities Resilient' has led to the implementation of the MOSE project, a system of mobile dikes designed to protect against flooding. However, this intervention remains controversial due to potential environmental impacts. The study evaluates both the drawbacks and benefits of such interventions, offering further proposals for the global safeguard of Venice and its lagoon.
