Summary
A unique preservation of medieval canon life's enclosure, particularly around the Viviers cathedral, has been identified in Provence. This study reveals that in Arles and Apt, entire canonical buildings were enclosed, whereas other sites like Aix, Carpentras, Fréjus, and Vaison only preserved essential structures. Notably, Romanesque cloisters, symbols of communal life dating to the late 12th century, were often constructed around pre-existing courtyards, forming a 'communal house'—a concept physically validated in Aix. The research synthesizes architectural evidence with historical documentation, highlighting the evolution and spatial organization of cathedral chapters in Provence.
