Summary
Private protected areas within the Brazilian Cerrado contribute significantly to biodiversity conservation, accommodating up to 14.5% of threatened vertebrate species ranges and increasing to 25% when considering remaining native habitats. This study highlights the spatial spread benefits of private lands, which are crucial in regions with high land-use conflicts and limited public protection. The research evaluates the effectiveness of Brazil's Native Vegetation Protection Law by assessing the distribution and ecological potential of private protected areas, particularly in the Southeastern Cerrado, where economic development intersects with biodiversity hotspots. Ecological restoration on these lands could further enhance conservation outcomes.
