Summary
Ranchers in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, Mexico, face significant challenges from predator attacks, yet only 27% report these incidents to the Predator Attacks Insurance (SAD) and receive compensation. Despite 88% of ranchers receiving immediate responses from SAD technicians, perceptions of its effectiveness vary widely: 56% view it positively, while 13% believe it offers no benefit. The study highlights a critical gap in reporting, as many ranchers resort to illegal hunting of predators due to dissatisfaction with the insurance system. Conducted through surveys across 18 communities from October 2019 to January 2020, this research underscores the need for improved predator management strategies and stronger incentives for reporting attacks to mitigate illegal practices.
