Summary

Augmented Reality (AR) significantly enhances tourist engagement and learning experiences, particularly when integrated into location-based treasure hunt games. A study conducted in Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage site and 2018 European Capital of Culture, demonstrated that AR effectively enriches cultural tourism by combining navigation tools with gamified elements. The research found that such an approach not only provides deeper city information but also fosters interest more effectively than traditional tours. Using a mixed-methods design, the study analyzed game logs, pre-post test interviews, observations, and surveys to triangulate findings. Key to success was the 'learning through fun' strategy, which leveraged GPS navigation to create a competitive yet educational experience.
