Summary

Traditional Islamic water jurisprudence, particularly the principles of al-hisba, can be adapted to address modern sustainable water management challenges. This study highlights how spatial concepts like 'harim al-ma'' and community actions associated with the qanat system in Algeria's M'Zab Valley contribute to protecting water quality and improving public health. By updating and integrating these traditional practices into water-sensitive urbanism and integrated water resource management, current water governance can benefit from centuries-old knowledge. The research builds on Ernest Feline's work on the M'Zab valley's qanat system and broader Islamic water laws in the Sahara, demonstrating their relevance to contemporary issues.
