Summary
The Borobudur Temple's Tathagata statues exemplify the integration of foreign cultural elements with local Javanese artistic traditions, demonstrating a form of 'local genius' that predates the Hindu-Buddha period. This study analyzed 20 Tathagata statues from the Rupadhatu terrace, identifying unique stylistic and placement characteristics that reflect ancient Javanese artists' (silpin) ability to blend external influences with indigenous culture. Using Ayatrohaedi's (1986) framework of five local genius traits as a reference, the research reveals how these statues embody both universal Buddhist iconography and distinct regional artistic expression, offering new insights into the cultural synthesis achieved by historical Javanese artisans.
