Summary
A sea defence project along Ghana's coast has significantly enhanced the sustainability and outstanding universal value (OUV) of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, comprising forts and castles. The initiative mitigated coastal erosion, reduced sand and gravel mining hazards, and improved sanitation, thereby bolstering the monument's resilience, protective capacity, aesthetic appeal, and authenticity. Through qualitative methods—including in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with key stakeholders—the study revealed that these improvements culminated in a stronger OUV for the site. Recommendations include extending such projects to other coastal heritage areas to foster sustainable development while preserving cultural integrity.
