Summary

A groundbreaking survey reveals gelada baboons (Theropithecus gelada) inhabit three mountain clusters in Tigray, Ethiopia—Ganta Afeshum, Hawzen, and Welkait escarpments—expanding their known range beyond the previously documented Bale and Simien Mountain national parks. The study, the first large-scale assessment of its kind, recorded 223 individuals, with Hawzen hosting the highest density (6.99/km²). Habitat-based counting methods and community interviews underpinned this discovery. Threats such as agricultural expansion, settlement, and low conservation awareness are identified, while further research on gelada ecology is recommended to inform protection strategies.
