Summary
This study reports two new species records for Campeche, Mexico: Micropygomyia (Micropygomyia) cayennensis maciasi and Dampfomyia (Coromyia) steatopyga, expanding the known diversity of flebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Calakmul. Analyzing data from seven localities collected between 2001 and 2007, researchers found significant variation in alpha (within-site) and beta (between-site) diversity, with Dos Lagunas Sur and La Guadalupe exhibiting the highest species richness. While co-occurrence analysis did not reveal meaningful patterns among species, the study highlights the utility of biodiversity estimators like Q for assessing community structure without bias from abundant or rare species. These findings contribute to understanding the ecological dynamics of flebotomine populations, which are vectors for leishmaniasis—a major health concern in Mexico.
