Summary

Chitwan National Park, Nepal, faces significant park-people conflicts primarily centered around resource extraction and livestock grazing. Key issues include insufficient permissions for collecting roofing materials, fuelwood, and timber; bans on animal grazing in public forests; inadequate compensation for wildlife-related damages; uncooperative park administration behavior; and lack of measures to mitigate monsoon flooding. These conflicts highlight critical gaps in park management and governance that necessitate policy improvements to enhance community development and conservation outcomes. The study employed a questionnaire survey involving 90 households (45 near the park, 45 far from the park) and interviews with 15 park authorities to gather data on sociodemographic characteristics, park-people interface, crop raiding, livestock depredation, and human/animal losses.
