Summary
Researchers document the first significant records of Spilogale angustifrons, a small carnivore, within the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve in Campeche, Mexico. Through 9000 camera-trap nights across four stations, they captured 18 photographs representing 15 independent events, revealing solitary male behavior and potential habitat use around artificial water sources. These findings expand the known distribution of S. angustifrons in the Yucatán Peninsula, suggesting its ecological role may be understudied due to limited surveys. The study highlights gaps in population and ecological data, emphasizing the need for targeted research to assess this species' conservation status within the UNESCO-listed site.
