Summary

A catastrophic landslide at Masuria Hill (MH) in Jodhpur, Western Rajasthan, on October 4, 2019, revealed critical geological vulnerabilities threatening residential areas and significant georesources. The study identified the Umed Bhawan Formation (UBF) of the Jodhpur Group as a key factor, with its soft clay-dominated base and rigid sand zone creating a failure plane prone to landslides due to liquefaction, mass wasting, and shear stresses—modelled through the Bedding Parallel Shear Zone (BPSZ). This pattern, also present in seven other nearby hills, poses an imminent threat to urban development. The research highlights the need for hazard mitigation while preserving georesources with educational and cultural value.
