From the Global to the Local: Staffing the Jesuit Colegios in Puebla (Nueva España)

Summary

A majority of Jesuits stationed at Puebla's five colegios in 1767 were American-born, with most originating from Mexico. However, Jesuit leaders exhibited a preference for European-born members on frontier missions, including those among the Guaraní in South America and northern Mexico. This study analyzes staffing profiles during the Society of Jesus' global educational and missionary activities, revealing regional disparities in leadership origins. The research examines the expulsion of Jesuits from Spanish territories under King Carlos III's order, highlighting the complex dynamics of their exile to Italy or imprisonment in Spain.
