Summary

A rapid and accurate lava flow simulation tool, VORIS 2.0.1, has been identified as suitable for volcanic risk assessment at the Goma Volcano Observatory (GVO) in Virunga National Park, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The study demonstrated that VORIS can effectively replicate known lava flows from the 2010 Nyamulagira eruption with high precision when input parameters and digital elevation models are carefully selected. This tool, which is freely available, offers a quick and user-friendly method for predicting lava flow paths during volcanic crises, thereby enhancing volcanic hazard management in densely populated areas. The findings highlight VORIS's potential to improve crisis response strategies at GVO.
