Summary

Jesuit missions among the Guaraní, including San Ignacio Mini and Sao Miguel das Missoes, were sophisticated urban settlements by 18th-century standards, with populations sustained primarily through natural growth rather than new conversions. Despite long-term demographic expansion, epidemics caused short-term declines, revealing the fragility of these frontier communities. A complex governing structure emerged to sustain the missions, featuring Guaraní leadership roles that evolved beyond traditional cacique succession, highlighting a dynamic adaptation to Jesuit administration (1609–1767).
