Summary

King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty's construction of Hwaseong Fortress was inspired by his perception of Xiaohe, a key figure in the founding of the Han Dynasty. Jeongjo saw parallels between Xiaohe's strategic role and his own ambitions for Joseon, interpreting Hwaseong as a modern equivalent to Weiyanggeong Palace, which Xiaohe had instrumentalized under Han Go-jo. This interpretation suggests that Jeongjo aimed to revitalize Joseon through architectural symbolism, drawing on Confucian traditions much like the Han Dynasty's foundation. The study analyzes Jeongjo's writings and actions, revealing his self-awareness as a ruler and his vision for governance, offering new insights into the motivations behind Hwaseong's construction.
