Summary
By 2030, climate change will shrink the suitable habitat of Swietenia macrophylla—a prized hardwood known as ‘green gold’—by 60 % across the Yucatán Peninsula and neighboring countries. The only major refuge left is Calakmul’s Biosphere Reserve, where seed collection and ex-situ planting can help re-acclimate populations to future conditions. Researchers combined field records with MaxEnt species-distribution modeling under a mid-range greenhouse-gas scenario (RCP 6.0), projecting dramatic range contraction in Quintana Roo while identifying Calakmul as the last stronghold for conservation.
