Summary
Nanoparticle-based consolidation using alkaline earth hydroxides (calcium hydroxide and barium hydroxide) successfully stabilized sulfate-polluted Maya mural paintings at Calakmul, Campeche, Mexico. This innovative approach demonstrated long-term re-adhesion of flaking painted layers while maintaining compatibility with the original lime-based painting technique. The study highlights the effectiveness of nanoparticle dispersions in preserving fragile artistic substrates under challenging subtropical climate conditions, offering a sustainable solution for conserving cultural heritage without compromising physicochemical properties.
