Summary

Recent research has shed new light on the ancient port system of the Gulf of Fos, a crucial yet understudied component of the Roman colony of Arles. Through a collective research program, scholars synthesized existing documentation and conducted field investigations near Pointe de Saint-Gervais in Fos-sur-Mer, alongside artifact studies and navigation analyses. This work has enabled a reinterpretation of historical data and opened avenues for further exploration, particularly regarding the role of the Canal de Marius in maritime trade during the early Roman Empire.
