Collective water transport electrification: Venetian ferry boat case study

World Heritage Site: Venice and its Lagoon

Publication Year: 2023

Publication Type: Conference paper

Publication Identifier: WHEE09C66E382

Summary

A transition to electric propulsion for Venetian ferry boats could significantly decarbonize water transport in Venice, preserving air quality and the integrity of its UNESCO-listed monuments. This study identifies the optimal electric motor, battery pack, and charging system for such a shift, while also evaluating potential impacts on service delivery. By replacing thermal propulsion with low-emission electric alternatives, this approach offers a viable path to reduce environmental impact in one of Europe's most vulnerable urban ecosystems.
