Summary
A lesser-known chapter in the history of Paestum emerges from this study, highlighting the pivotal role of General Don Felice Gazzola's royal casino, Chiatamone, as a hub for the 'rediscovery' of the ancient site. The research reconstructs this period through the accounts of foreign travelers, notably French pensionnaire Pierre-Louis Moreau-Desproux, revealing how Gazzola used the casino not as a residence but as a strategic space to promote and display reliefs from Posidonian antiquities. These artifacts, commissioned by Gazzola, formed the visual foundation for an ambitious yet unpublished publishing project, later partially realized by Paolo Antonio Paoli. The study sheds light on the intersection of masonic influence, royal patronage, and archaeological rediscovery in 18th-century Paestum.
