Summary

Smart urban management through data-driven travel solutions is demonstrated by the Valletta Travel Information Service (VaTIS), which leverages automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) and low-cost sensors to analyze traffic patterns. The system, implemented in its first phase using existing camera data and secondary travel behavior records, shows promise for optimizing infrastructure use and managing travel demand more efficiently. This research highlights the potential of integrating intelligent applications with sensor technology to not only improve urban planning but also pave the way for future user engagement strategies aimed at behavior change. The findings underscore the scalability and adaptability of such systems in addressing the challenges posed by limited resources in heritage cities like Valletta.
