Summary

Aerial photogrammetry using UAVs offers a precise, non-invasive alternative to traditional ground measurements for monitoring sand traps in dunes. This study found that UAV-derived topographic data can accurately assess aeolian processes with minimal surface disruption, unlike conventional methods that harm the dune and are limited by infrequent sampling (twice yearly). By comparing UAV aerial images with ground-based granulometry, researchers demonstrated the potential for automated photogrammetric techniques to evaluate sand trap effectiveness at optimal intervals (every 2–3 months), advancing sustainable dune conservation on the Curonian Spit.
