Authenticiteit, een geloofwaardig begrip?

Authenticity, as a concept for UNESCO World Heritage Sites, retains its credibility when defined clearly within cultural contexts. The study examines two Dutch sites—Rietveld Schröderhuis and Van Nellefabriek—both part of the Modern Movement architecture, where 'design authenticity' plays a pivotal role in their nomination. While authenticity can vary globally, it remains a meaningful criterion if anchored in specific cultural frameworks, avoiding arbitrary application. This analysis builds on The Nara Document (1994) and UNESCO’s Operational Guidelines, which require sites to demonstrate 'Outstanding Universal Values' alongside integrity and authenticity. The research highlights that authenticity, when properly contextualized, can serve as a robust qualitative benchmark for heritage evaluation.
